Cara’s story

Cara was closed up in a zoo in Cavriglia for more than ten years. Her life in total seclusion and lacking of environmental stimuli lead to depression and immobility (almost all day she would be just lying around). She also developed arthritis in her legs and the pain caused her to move around like a robot. She arrived at Ippoasi in 2015 and literally started her life all over. All the stimuli made her life interesting and varied. She learned how to take baths in the mud, how to root and build relationships with the other pigs – the first time she ever so another pig in all her life. After about one year at Ippoasi, she was mentally and physically so well recovered that she was finally back in heat.
